And in every country on earth except the United States, they have demanded that sickness not expose people to economic ruin.

I’m unconvinced of the veracity of this statement. One can cite contentious polling data on specific approaches - public and private - aimed at ensuring that “sickness not expose people to economic ruin.” Yet, it is spurious to claim that the US is an exception to “every country on earth” (a hyperbolic choice of words, to be sure) in expressing this desire on the part of its citizens. Although opponents of genuine health care reform may unwittingly (and, I believe foolishly) support conditions that lead to higher costs, it is false to conflate this with a conscious desire to hurt their own bottom lines, as Frum’s extended logic entails.

Which means that advocates for private markets had better figure out ways to accomplish these goals that do not invite government to mess with the private economy. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, conservatives devised and deployed many such ideas.

Does Frum actually believe that solutions in “private markets,” which eluded conservatives during their self-described heyday, are just sitting there, waiting to be plucked from the ether by some coming Renaissance of the Right? If so, then he’s still a fair distance from the full-on disenchantment required to see the forest for the trees. Kudos for refusing to parrot the charge of socialism, and for correctly reminding your readers of the Bush administration’s central role in expanding government spending, but the poisonous remnants of ideological nostalgia clearly still have a hold on you, Mr. Frum.

I’ve been reading Frum for about twenty five years now. Personally I’ve always rather loathed the supercilious little twit. He is, in my opinion, too typical af people born in high circumstances (His mother was a famous newcaster here in Canada) who tended to sneer at people who weren’t as fortunate as him. His conservatism was of the “I got mine, Jack, so eff you.” type.

With this blog entry along with this one several months ago he’s starting to gain my respect. I still don’t agree with him but he seems to have lost much of his sneer.

Frum has also been battling the adverse affects of Lyme disease. I think his throwing in his lot with reasonable discussion has had more of an effect on him than a small insect.frumforum.com
